Study in the Seat of Constitutional Democracy

Whether it’s a pre-law student attending oral arguments at the Supreme Court through our spring Constitutional Litigation class or a Constitutional Democracy major interning on Capitol Hill or at the Library of Congress through our Kinder Scholars Summer Program, the Kinder Institute’s two DC-based programs bring democracy to life for all participants.

KINDER SCHOLARS DC SUMMER PROGRAM

The Kinder Scholars Program immerses students in DC, where they study the history and theory of democracy in the classroom and then practice it in the workplace, though the summer’s required internship component. Applications run during September and October of each academic year, and sophomores or juniors of any major are eligible to apply.

CONSTITUTIONAL LITIGATION

Students in the Constitutional Litigation seminar that is taught each spring study constitutional law in the classroom and then spend Spring Break witnessing it in action in DC, through touring the Department of Justice, meeting with constitutional lawyers, and visiting the nation’s highest court. Applications run during September and October of each academic year and are open to students of any major and year.

Funding Opportunities

All students who participate in either DC experience are eligible to apply for scholarships designed to help offset tuition and mandatory fees associated with the program. In addition to being able to apply for tuition scholarships, students in the Kinder Scholars DC Program receive housing for the duration of the summer as well as a small living stipend.

Applications for both DC programs open at the beginning of the fall semester with deadlines in mid-October. Visit the individual program pages to find application materials.
