Contextualizing the Present

With the Monroe Doctrine a news refrain of sorts in early 2026, Kinder Institute Director Jay Sexton, author of The Monroe Doctrine: Empire and Nation in Nineteenth-Century America, the story of how an obscure and routine presidential message took on iconic status before curiously disappearing only to re-appear at intervals over time, was called upon to provide expert commentary on current affairs from the historian’s vantage point. He appeared on outlets ranging from the BBC, to The Road to Now podcast, but perhaps nowhere more visibly than on the CBS Sunday Morning News with Mo Rocca.
